1. PREPARATION
First, confirm your current version of MasterCook is functioning properly by going to the Cookbooks screen and selecting Refresh File List from the Tools menu. If it refreshes without a problem, then your content is likely good. If you have problems refreshing, see this article.
2. BACKUP YOUR CURRENT FILES
Next, backup the MasterCook files for your current version of MasterCook. See these instructions.
3. DOWNLOAD YOUR INSTALLATION FILE
If you previously purchased MasterCook 24 and you have a current subscription to MasterCook.com, you have active download links from your previous purchases in your Downloadable Product account page. Use the Download link in the right column for your previously purchased MasterCook 24. The Download link will always download the most recent version. Please allow the file to fully download before you attempt to open it.
Your web browser controls where files download on your computer. Most web browsers save them within the Downloads folder on your computer, so look in that folder.
If you have problems downloading, make sure your antivirus program and web browser are not blocking it. Brand new programs are often blocked because they are so new that they do not have a user reputation yet. See these articles:
4. INSTALL MASTERCOOK 24
BEFORE YOU BEGIN: Make sure no previous version of MasterCook is running. Close the sync manager from a previous version as well, or you will get an error when you start the installation. Right click on the MasterCook icon in the Windows System Tray in the lower right corner to Exit the sync manager.
Locate the file called MasterCook_24.0.0.0_SetUp. It is the file you will open to install MasterCook 24 onto your computer.
Double click on that SetUp file to start the installation. The first screen is from Windows User Account Control and wants your permission to install the program onto your computer. Press the Yes button.
Now, you will see the MasterCook 24 Setup Window with the Collecting Information heading active. Press the Next button on this screen.
The End-User License Agreement screen appears. Select I accept the terms in the License Agreement in order to press the Next button on this screen.
The Program Files Installation Folder screen appears. This controls where the program's files are installed on your computer. You can leave it at the location selected or browse to another location. IMPORTANT: If you are installing on a network drive, you need to use the Browse button. Do not copy/paste the address. Press the Next button on this screen.
The User Files Installation Folder screen appears. This controls where the user files (cookbooks, menus, shopping lists, etc.) are installed on your computer. You can leave it at the location selected or browse to another location. IMPORTANT: If you are installing on a network drive, you need to use the Browse button. Do not copy/paste the address. Press the Next button on this screen.
The Ready to Install screen appears. Press the Install button.
The installer checks to see if the VLC media player is already installed on your computer. If it is already installed on your computer, it will load the next screen of the MasterCook 24 Setup. If the VLC media player is not installed on your computer, it will give you a chance to install it so you can play videos within MasterCook 24. The Yes option is selected for you. Press the Next button to install the VLC media player.
The VLC media player installation program launches. Press OK to install the VLC media player.
The VLC media player Setup window appears. Press the Next button.
The VLC media player License Agreement screen appears. Press the Next button.
The VLC media player Setup screen shows the Choose Components screen. Press the Next button.
The VLC media player Setup screen shows the Choose Install Location screen. Press the Install button.
After the VLC media player Setup screen installs the files it shows the Completing VLC media player Setup. Press the Finish button.
The Privacy and Network Access Policy window appears. Press the Continue button to close it. Press the X in the upper right corner of the main VLC media player window to close it as well.
The User Data Upgrade screen appears. The installer will copy your content from a previous version of MasterCook that is installed on your computer. If you have more than one version installed on your computer, it copies the content from the most recent version. The Yes box is checked by default. Press the Next button so the installer can copy your content into MasterCook 24 for you.
The Upgrade MasterCook Data window appears to let you know it can take a few minutes. Depending on the number of cookbooks and their file sizes in the previous MasterCook version, it can take 10 minutes or more to copy all of your files. Press the Yes button and be patient. Do not click on the main MasterCook 24 Setup window or you will hide the Upgrade MasterCook Data window behind it.
When it has finished copying your files from the previous version of MasterCook you will see the Data upgrade complete message. Look for this screen if it becomes buried. You can even drag the main MasterCook 24 Setup screen off to the side to locate the hidden Upgrade MasterCook Data window. You must click on OK to complete the MasterCook 24 installation.
Only after you have pressed the OK button, then you will be able to click on the Finish button in the main MasterCook 24 Setup window. Press the Finish button in the MasterCook 24 Setup Complete screen.
After you press the Finish button, MasterCook 24 will launch. Click on the Cookbooks link at the top of the program to see your content in the new version.

If you have a current subscription to MasterCook.com, you can sync MasterCook 24 with your online account. Select the Sync button at the top of the program to launch the sync manager and connect to your MasterCook.com account.
