MasterCook 22 USDA FoodData Central Branded Food Items

MasterCook 22 has greatly expanded its ingredient database as requested by several MasterCook customers. Now it includes the branded food items and their nutritional values supplied by the food manufacturers to the USDA.

The USDA no longer updates their legacy ingredient database, which is what MasterCook 2020 and older are using. Going forward, they will only be updating the branded food items database which MasterCook 22 includes.

MasterCook 22 has over 300,000 ingredients. It has all of the ingredients from MasterCook 20 (the final 2019 legacy food data set from the USDA) plus all of the branded food items (Oct 2021 release) from the USDA.

The basic legacy food items from the USDA are the lower-case ingredients. The branded food items are ALL CAPS as they are at the USDA FoodData Central. Note: The UPC codes are included in the description for a branded food item for reference.

  • In MasterCook 2020, its MC Ingredients.ing file is 11 MB.
  • In MasterCook 22, its MC Ingredients.ing file is 250 MB.

Notice: Because there are over 300,000 ingredients in MC 22, it will take about 10 seconds for the Ingredient List window to initially load. Subsequent launches will be much quicker during your current session of MasterCook (until you restart the program). This same delay happens when you initially launch the Recipe Edit screen because it also loads the Ingredient List, but subsequent visits to the Recipe Edit screen will not be delayed during your current session of MasterCook. MasterCook 22 will also install and include the MC Ingredients.ing file from MasterCook 2020, if you would rather use a smaller database set instead.
